Postgraduate Degrees in England, Scotland and Wales
The UK offers postgraduate courses (Master’s, MBA) in a wide range of academic fields. All postgraduate courses in Great Britain adhere to strict regulations supervised by governmental and non-governmental quality assurance organisations and are recognised worldwide. A postgraduate course lasts one year (full-time attendance), while it can be completed in up to four years (part-time attendance). As a candidate you may choose from thousands of specialised courses in arts, science, finance sciences and humanities. The wide range of options and the flexible approach of the British educational system mean that you have the freedom to choose exactly what you want to study.
Master’s Degrees: MA/MSc/MBA/MLitt/MEd/MEng/MMus
Postgraduate courses have various titles, as can be noticed above. However, the different titles (eg, MA/MSc/MBA/MLitt/MEd/MEng/MMus) reflect the range of disciplines of the course and all have the same level and same recognition. For example, there is no real difference between an MA Marketing degree and an MSc Marketing degree since both courses have exactly the same value. For a candidate to be awarded a postgraduate degree, all taught units as well as a final year thesis must be successfully completed.
A postgraduate degree in England, Scotland or Wales gives you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge in a specific field that you are already familiar with from your undergraduate studies (Bachelor’s) or even to opt for a completely different direction, using the skills you have developed from your first degree as well as any work experience you may have acquired. For instance, a medical science or engineering graduate is even able to choose to follow a postgraduate degree course in business management.
There are two main types of postgraduate degree courses:
1) Taught Master’s Degree – (MA, MSc, LLM, MEd etc)
2) Research Master’s Degree – (MRes, MPhil)
Taught master’s degrees are postgraduate degree courses which consist of a series of lectures, exams, projects, essays, reports, presentations as well as the writing of a final-year thesis/project which the student completes during the last year of their studies.
Research master’s degrees are postgraduate degree courses which involve an in-depth study of a specific field without necessarily having to attend lectures. Instead, the student dedicates their time to prepare and complete their research paper and the assessment of its value determines their final grade.
